ROUND 1 - ROWRAH The team arrived on the Friday with the bike only barely ready with still a few minor things to get ready. The back tyre was too big and fouling the swingarm and the front was still the slick the bike came with. Dean was bringing both over on the ferry from Northern Ireland. Saturday saw the team splitting up and getting the new tyres fitted and searching for other bits such as the correct jet and some chain split links. We got the split links but still couldn't find anywhere in Cumbria to supply Mikuni RD jets. Again we had to borrow them from MT's are Nasty, Thanks again. To all our amazement the bike passed scrutineerig first time. A first for Klingon Warriors. Dean got on and tried the untested bike out for a few laps and came in complaining of some top end miss firing. We came down a jet size which seemed to cure things a bit but we eventually decided to change to the second barrel. It was at this time we found that the crank had twisted as was a write off. The second engine went in loosing us most of the days practice and scratch races.
The bike as we always remember it, in bits! On race day, Mark started and the bike seemed to be going ok. Minutes later he came in after crashing heavily on the left hand side, breaking a clutch lever and the gear change. The repairs took a while as we didn't have a replacement gear change and had to modify the existing lever, making it shorter and impossible to use. We had lost to much time by then anyway and were well down the field so we all used the race to get used to the new bike especially the evil front brake.
ROUND 2 - ROWRAH Again another catalogue of disasters. With bits falling off, bits coming loose, the chain coming off, and Andy crashing it in spectacular fashion for the spectators on the main bend and an engine which would only rev to 12000.
The aftermath of Andy's crash, good skid mark! ROUND 3 - Ty Croes Preparations for the race didn't go too well, the twisted crank was repaired and the first engine overhauled. On testing, a mysterious top end missfire meant that the bike would not rev beyond 11,000 and was loosing power getting there. The search for the culprit was long and drawn out, the plug was replaced, coil, HT lead, plug cap, timing checked, all giving no change. Eventually out of desperation and the thought of having to buy another CDI, the ignition pick up coils were replaced. The missfire has now gone and the bike revs to the normall 13500. Ty Croes here we come. The race was even worse, after a great start the bike was lying 9th after one and a half hours at an average 56 mph. Mark came in with the engine completely dead and a fried coil. After changing the coil, the bike started to misfire, jets were changed but this only cured the symptoms. We eventually decided to give up after four hours since its no fun being overtaken by half the field.
Round 4 - Rowrah Preparations for the race have been left to the last minute as usual. Come the Tuesday before the race the bike is still in bits. The ignition from our donor RS125 has been fitted but there are still some serious problems to sort out. Parts for the rear master cylinder have just arrived from Breadline racing so that we will at least cure the leaking master cylinder and have a working rear brake if we can get the bits to fit. An inlet mainfold from a Honda NR125 has been bought from the local breakers so that at least we will have a chance to fit the new carb, but it will still need a bit of bodging to go on. The Werx exhaust has been welded up and fitted. So all the new parts are ready to go on but it is four days before practice and the bike hasn't even been started since TyCroes. A big thanks to Dave Childs (Piston Broke) and Keith (Acme) for all the advice and a can of Avgas from Dave. Disaster has hit the team again, after a promising start, getting the carb and exhaust on. The bike would not rev beyond 11,000 the pipe is just not the right tuned length. The old exhaust was replaced and the spare bottom end fitted. On Sunday Andy took the start and after six laps crashed heavily, stopping the race. He was carted off to Whitehaven hospital with a suspected broken arm which later turned out to be a fracture of the Clavicle and Scapula. You can just see the breaks in the middle just to the right and in the top right hand side just above where the rib crosses the Clavicle. Andy has now got at least three weeks of work with his arm in a sling.
